He went to Clifton College and Hertford College Oxford.
Coffin was a planter in India, and served in the Calcutta Light Horse and the Bihar Light Horse as a trooper.

He received a gunshot wound to the abdomen on 18 December 1915. He was treated at No 10 Casualty Clearing Station but died 2 days later.
