The East African Campaign was a series of battles and guerrilla actions which started in German East Africa (now Tanzania) and ultimately impacted portions of Mozambique, Northern Rhodesia, British East Africa, Uganda, and the Belgian Congo. The German colonial forces, led by Lieutenant Colonel Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck, skillfully fought for the duration of World War I and surrendered only after that war had ended. Other campaigns were conducted in West and South West Africa.
The 101st went to East Africa.
He took part in the attack on Tanga on 4/11/1914 when the 101st entered the town and crossed bayonets with the opposing Germans.
12 officers, 6 King's Commissioned Officers and 6 Viceroy's Commissioned Officers were killed in the action, and Cook was the only surviver, albeit with 'severe wounds' to his thigh and arm. He was made a PoW by the Germans.
Detail :
His wounds required surgery, which prolonged but did not save his life, and he died of his wounds on 27 July 1915, having been a prisoner for 9 months.
