| Mike: HMS Ark Royal 02: The second ship to bear the name Ark Royal was purchased 1914 by the Royal Navy whilst being built as a merchant ship. Converted into a sea-plane carrier she was possibly the first ?modern? aircraft carrier. She saw service at the Dardanelles and the Gallipoli landings while serving with the Mediterranean Fleet. Renamed HMS Pegasus in 1934, in order that the name Ark Royal could be reallocated, she was eventually sent for scrap in 1950. |
